Bhakshak Trailer Gets SRK Clapping

Brace yourself for a movie about a strong-willed woman who raises her voice for a societal cause. Indeed, that’s the buzz following the long-awaited trailer of the Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Bhakshak, which will be premiering on Feb 9, 2024. This daring and realistic film, directed by Pulkit (of the Bose:Dead/Alive fame), sheds light on the plight of under-privileged, exploited and abandoned girls in the Indian community. The film’s title roughly translates to “Devourer” - perhaps symbolic of the avarice among society’s power-mongers and those whom they prey on.

Pednekar, essaying the role of investigative journalist Vaishali Singh, comes upon a girls shelter and goes on to expose the jarring reality of the cruel treatment of young women. In so doing, she blows the lid of a scheme perpetrated by some people in power. The movie which also stars Sanjay Mishra, Aditya Srivastava and Sai Tamhankar in key roles, has received the endorsement of none other than King Khan.

Being one of the first to view the film’s trailer, Shah Rukh Khan posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, “All the best for the film. It’s such a hard-hitting film...!! And the whole cast is outstanding.” Given the kind of humongous following the Pathaan star has on social media, his favourable comments is the ideal impetus the film needs in its run-up to hitting screens.

Speaking on behalf of Red Chillies Entertainment and the film’s producers – Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma - Pulkit told the media in an emphatic voice, “Our aim was to shed light on the harsh realities of society and spark conversations that lead to meaningful change.” The Maroon director added, “I’m looking forward to more people joining this important dialogue.”

Bhumi Pednekar is known for her roles as self-possessed, small-town women - a giant-killer of sorts. She has also proven to be quite versatile, playing an overweight bride in 2015’s romcom Dum Laga ke Haisha; the 70-plus sharpshooter Chandro Tomar in the biopic Saand ki Aankh; and a closeted lesbian in Badhaai Do (2022) - winning prestigious awards for each of these films. It looks like Bhakshak will add another feather to her cap or a trophy for the cabinet.
