20-Year-Old Emirati Scientist makes it to Global Powerful Women’s List

Whoever said age is an impediment to over-achievement? Barely out of her teens, Emirati scientist - Jameela Almasoud - has contradicted the cynics by breaking into the Global 200 Powerful Women Leaders of 2024. Indeed, this visionary 20-year-old has secured no less than a triple medical degree – genetics, neuroscience and cancer biology. The superlative scholar made it to the prestigious international list - laid out by the White Page International Conclave - for her extraordinary accomplishments in medical research and public health.

At present, the remarkably talented Jameela holds an impressive and coveted portfolio. Yes, this young lady is serving on the UK’s Global Youth Council and as the Middle East ambassador for the University College Dublin (USB).  Jameela is a staunch believer in the integration of several disciplines of Medicine in order to push the boundaries and broaden the horizons of her field.

It was this dedication to advancing scientific research that saw Jameela getting a paper published in the renowned Microbiology Resource Announcements journal. This she did in defiance of a sceptical senior scientist who grossly underestimated her ability. The young woman then went on to overcome the rejection from a major lab to secure a PhD position at University College London (UCL). This Jameela did before further bolstering her resume with credentials from Harvard University and MIT. How’s that for an Emirati trailblazer!

And this is all only the start of what is sure to be a long and illustrious career. But Jameela does not want to partake in this journey alone as she is keen on guiding other fledgling scientists in her areas of expertise. The indefatigable youngster also hopes to goad her protégés into making groundbreaking achievements and not limiting their vision to the tried and tested. It is thus fitting to conclude with a direct quote from Jameela, “By bringing fresh, multifaceted approaches to the table, I hope to inspire others to look beyond the obvious.” For the moment though, it would be hard to look beyond a certain Ms. Almasoud.
