Multi-Crore “Meow Meow” Drug Bust
Law enforces have seized a gigantic amount of an illicit drug known as "Meow Meow" in Maharashtra’s district of Sangli, while conducting busts in other cities too.
Maharastra, February 22, 2024: Anti-narcotic law-enforces have seized a staggering 140 kilos of the banned substance mephedrone. This captured cache reportedly amounts to the humongous sum of Rs. 300 Crore rupees or approximately 36 million U.S. dollars. Cops conducted the successful raid at a company storage facility at Kupwad MIDC locality of the Maharashtra’s southern Sangli district.
What is Mephedrone?
Mephedrone, which goes by a slew of street names like “drone”, “M-Cat”, “white magic”, “meow meow” and “bubble”, was outlawed in India on April 16, 2010. This, after the Indian parliament passed an amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971) which also targeted other Class-B drugs. The synthetic stimulant is an empathogen drug, which is known to elevate mood, increase metal processes, spark sexual stimulation and lower hostility. However, what makes it dangerous is the long term effects of addictiveness, anxiety, paranoia and depression.
Nationwide Bust and Terror Angle
The Sangli raid is the latest development in the recently-launched nationwide crackdown on mephedrone peddlers. In fact, the expansive move conducted by the Pune Police, has yielded a recovery of as much as Rs. 3,700 Crore worth of the banned item. Busts across Delhi and Pune themselves had uncovered 1,100 kg of mephedrone (amounting to Rs, 2,500 Crore), as per a report by the police on Wednesday, February, 2024. The arrest of three drug smugglers in Pune and their subsequent interrogation established the nexus between the two cities. The cops are also investigating a possible terror-funding network behind the clandestine shipment and sales of the drug.
