IPL Player Abhishek Sharma Involved in Model’s Suicide?

Indian Premier League star Abhishek Sharma has apparently moved from lush cricket grounds into hot water. The Sun Risers Hyderabad all-rounder is to be grilled by the Surat police over his dubious relationship with the recently-deceased fashion model and designer Tanya Singh. The cops have issued an inquiry summons for the sportsman due to his association with Tanya, whose body was found dangling from a ceiling at her family’s flat in the Gujarat city. Bhanwar Singh - father of the expired 28-year-old - made the shocking discovery in the Vesu locality domicile on the morning of Monday, February 19th, 2024.

The needle of suspicion has turned toward Abhishek due to his apparent friendship with Tanya. Numerous photos of the two of them entwined found their way onto Tanya’s social media sites, which boast large followings. Furthermore, the police uncovered unanswered whatsapp messages sent from the deceased’s phone to Abhishek’s mobile. Initial investigations also reveal that Abhishek had blocked Tanya from his account on the communication app.

One wonders if this ongoing case may ruin the young man’s successful career. Named in India's Under-19 Cricket World Cup team in 2017, Abhishek was picked up by IPL team Delhi Capitals in 2018 for a whopping Rs. 55 Lakh and by the tournament’s Hyderabad team in 2022. A native of Amritsar, Punjab, this prodigy is known for his hard-hitting, high-scoring ways. One can't help but ponder the question - was Tanya also subjected to such behaviour?

Indian news seems to be occasionally punctuated by sensational reports of celebrity romance-related suicides. And these self-inflicted, crime-of-passion deaths usually occur by hanging. Back in 2004, beauty queen, fashion model and music video jockey Nafisa Joseph ended her life at the end of a rope after a messy relationship with Mumbai businessman Gautam Khanduja. According to various testimonies in the case, the 26-year-old took the drastic step due to her marriage to Khanduja being called off.

Then in 2013, similar circumstances led to Bollywood starlet Jiah Khan finding a place in the obituary column. A lengthy suicide note addressed to her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi indicated that he used to physically and emotionally abuse her. The case which dragged on for the next ten years and which involved claims of foul play, was finally closed with Pancholi’s acquittal due to “lack of evidence”.

The most rattling and recent of all such cases was megastar Sushant Singh’s Rajput 2020 suicide, in which his model and actress lover Rhea Charkaborty found herself embroiled in charges of drug-procuring and abetment to suicide. As fierce as the determination of these deceased celebrities are to succeed in their trade, the more vulnerable appear to be their hearts. Indeed, this is a heart-wrenching trend.
