Dubai Airports To Do a Global First in Renewable Energy
The city’s two major airports to get a curious new addition – the largest in the world.
Often blamed for being one of the advanced countries to lay a sizeable carbon footprint, Dubai is showing efforts to reverse the trend with an ambitious new construction. The Sun is shining bright for Dubai Airports. Yes, plans are underway for the setting up the globe’s most expansive rooftop solar panel installation. The city is indeed looking skyward, and how.
Joining forces with Etihad Clean Energy Development Company, the airports firm has laid out the blueprint for the visionary project which will place 62,904 solar panels atop Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central Airport (DWC). For starters, the green energy feature will provide 6.5 per cent of the former location’s power requirements and a whopping 5th of the latter’s.
This unique addition, which is set to be up and running as soon as 2026, is expected to churn out over 60,000 megawatts of clean energy yearly. In so doing, it will neutralise a sizable 23,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. This counterbalance works out to running about 3,000 homes and cancelling out 5,000 road vehicles per year.
If all goes to plan, the Middle East hub will achieve its goal of generating a quarter of its total energy from renewable resources by 2030. The city is further setting its sights on 100 per cent conversion by 2050. How’s that for Dubai’s efforts towards sustainability and environmental conservation!
