It’s not just soon-to-be-wed Anant Ambani's weight loss that has grabbed eye balls and raised eye brows. There is a particular accessory which mobile phones have rendered unnecessary, but which the young man was found donning during his pre-wedding celebrations. The item is undoubtedly a status symbol. Yes, it’s a luxury watch. In Anant’s case, it’s a Richard Mille, to be precise. And it’s value? Rs. 18 Crore  or 21.7 million USD.

Materialism usually accompanies the rich and famous and this lot of privileged people tend to flaunt their prized possessions. There is no denying that Anant, whose net worth is 40 billion USD, is one of them. Meanwhile, the wife of an even wealthier guest took public note of the flashy time piece on Anant’s wrist. “That watch is fantastic! That is so cool. Wow!”, exclaimed Pricilla Chan, spouse of a certain Mark Zuckerberg. 

The Meta CEO, who boasts a personal worth of 176 billion USD (overshadowing Anant's by 136 billion USD), seems keen to take a leaf out of his host’s book. Yes, the founder of revolutionary social media platform Facebook, expressed interest in getting a costly watch for himself too. Zuckerberg was heard saying, “You know, I never really wanted to get a watch. But after seeing that, I was like, watches are cool.”

While tennis legend Roger Federer is brand ambassador for Rolex, there a slew of other luxury watch makers that are still attracting buyers. These include Cartier, Patek Phillipe, Omega, Blancpain, Breitling, Panerai, Hublot and Piaget among several others. Legend has it that in 1974, Rock’n’Roll icon Elvis Presley who was known for his generosity, exchanged his diamond-studded watch for a mickey mouse time-piece belonging to John Paul Jones, bassist for the rock band Led Zeppelin.

Let’s face it: Time means a lot to celebrities and millionaires, so why not have the dimension encased in a luxurious and portable frame. After all, Anant Ambani has an illustrious career and his whole life and marriage ahead of him... not to mention, his daily workouts!
