Tabu/Kareena/Kriti Starrer ‘The Crew’ Struggling to Stay Airborne
Is this feminist-themed flight of fancy Bollywood release in danger of crash-landing?
Released at the end of International Women’s Month, new Bollywood release The Crew has not been able to boast quite the amount of Woman Power as it had hoped. This aerial comedy-heist film placed its trust in the box-office potential of glamorous veterans Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan as well as the seductive lure of relative newcomer Kriti Sanon. But it looks like the shrewdly conceived theft in the film will add up to more monetarily that the film’s actual earning potential.
Not to be mistake though, The Crew had a promising “take-off” when hit theatres on Friday, April 29th, 2024. A nifty script full of humour and twists, brought to life by the celebrated trio of top actresses, did manage to more than break even on its opening weekend. But even more was expected of this Rs 40 Crore budgeted project which was directed by the capable Rajesh A. Kishnan and produced by the prolific Ekta Kapoor and Anil Kapoor among others.
After raking in Rs. 22 Crore oversees on the initial Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Rs. 35.4 Crore at home for a grand total of Rs. 57.4 Crore gross, the film took a sharp nosedive on Monday, April 1. Indeed, there was a jarring drop in ticket sales by about 50 per cent, casting a shadow on the film's flight plan.
Still maybe, the money-counters are being prematurely sceptical as the film’s flight isn’t going to be over any time soon. So, movie-goers should take their seats and buckle up for a film which will take them surging to Cloud 9. Going by initial reviews, this movie is aiming for the skies and has the kind of thrust to get there.
