The firing of these Ramadan cannons is a time-honoured tradition that dates back to the 1960s in the UAE, when cannons were fired to signal the end of the daily fast for people who lived in areas where they could not hear the call to prayer, and each day during the holy month a single shot is fired from cannons scattered across the city.
