Bill Gates Enjoys Roadside Indian Cuppa
The former corporate big-wig found Indian innovation even in such a mundane Indian ritual.
It seems even the world’s most influential and wealthiest men crave the stimulation derived from a cup of Indian tea. Microsoft co-founder, veritable millionaire and compassionate philanthropist Bill Gates in particular took time out from his busy India schedule for sips of the inexpensive but highly valued chai.
On this unusual occasion, it was the unique offering of social media sensation Dolly Chaiwala. The tea break came only hours after Gates’ trip to Bhuvaneshwar, where he meet with Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and visited city slums. Perhaps the experience had left a bad taste in his mouth, one that only India’s favourite drink could eradicate.
The much-vaunted Mr. Gates actually stopped for the refreshing beverage at Dolly’s humble roadside tea stall, which stands adjacent to the VCA Stadium in Sadar area of Nagpur. The former corporate honcho initiated conversation with the minor celebrity with the phrase, “One chai please”. Though Gates seemed unaware of the ingredients and preparation that went into his order, he expressed delight at its unique flavour, texture and froth.
Gates went on to record a video of the serving, posting it on Instagram along with the message, “I’m excited to back in India, home to incredible innovators working on new ways to save and improve lives and even make a cup of tea.” Adding a touch of Hindi, he said, “Looking forward to many chai pe charcha (discussions over tea)." Yes, it really looks like India is Bill Gates cup of tea... in more ways than one.
