Pune Juvenile Causes Fatal Road Accident, Gets off Lightly
The youth’s father and one other person to take the heat for the mishap.
Fatal road accidents are common in India with reckless drivers often throwing caution to the wind. But what is not very frequent is an under-age driver at the helm of a vehicle when it spins out of control and causes death. Yes, this is what occurred on the night of Sunday, May 19th, 2024, in the western Indian city of Pune.
A juvenile ran a Porsche sports car into two men on a motorcycle, killing them both before ramming into a pedestrian railing near the city’s Kalyani area. What’s more, the culprit who was arrested a few hours later, was discovered to have been driving under the influence of alcohol. On examination of the accident, police discovered that the car didn’t even bear a number plate.
While the errant youth’s father (a famous real estate developer) and the bar-tender who had served the youngster alcohol have both been booked, the boy himself got off lightly. Yes, being a juvenile, he was granted immediate bail. But the concerned judge attached a few odd conditions, requiring the accused to 1) work with the police for a fortnight; 2) submit a personal essay about the accident; 3) seek treatment to quit drinking; and 4) undergo psychiatric counselling. How’s that for an easy sentence! But hopefully, going down the road, this will set the wayward driver on... the right path.
