Bizarre Rain-Induced Accident at Delhi Airport
Overwhelming monsoon fury in Delhi leaves havoc in its wake.
Respite from the scorching summer heat in India’s National Capital has arrived thanks to the monsoon rains. But the dramatic transition has come at quite a cost. There have been heavy downpours leading to water-logging, uprooted trees, stalled vehicles and power cuts. Plus, the accompanying thunderstorms and wind velocity has caused a most unusual mishap at the Delhi Domestic Airport. No, it’s not a plane crashing, but rather a portion of the roof of Terminal 1!
The collateral damage has claimed one person’s life and injured eight others while some cars were crushed with the impact of the collapse. While rescue operations got underway, all flights at the Terminal were suspended or cancelled. Delhi Fire Services swung into action soon after the disaster occurred at 5:30 on the morning of Friday, June 28th. Thankfully, the other three Terminals were unaffected and inbound and outbound scheduling continues unhindered.
During the course of the day, many areas in the NCR found themselves submerged with drivers struggling to negotiate traffic jams and residents wading through knee/waist-deep water... even at the New Delhi Railway station. Closed metro stations and blocked underpasses have also been reported.
The areas worst hit by the flooding were in major localities of Delhi’s south. These include Saket, Vasant Kunj, New Friends Colony, Safdarjunj, Greater Kailash and Malviya Nagar. The water stagnation didn’t even spare some of the Member of Parliaments’ residences. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police issued advisories mentioning arterial roads that were more accessible. It looks like after months of sweltering summer heat, the rains have taken Delhi by storm. Quite literally.
