Vocalist Mallika Rajput’s Death: Suicide or Murder?

Another Indian celebrity has died prematurely. Vijay Lakshmi, alias Mallika Rajput, who rose to fame with a supporting role in the Kangana Ranaut-starring crime comedy Revolver Rani (2014), has expired under mysterious circumstances. It looks like the 35-year-old vocalist and actress reached her demise at the end of a rope. Yes, family found the young woman’s body dangling from a fan at their house in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The startling discovery was made and reported to the police on the night of Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The distraught mother of the deceased woman said in response to queries from the media, “Initially, the door was closed and the light was on. We took three rounds but did not open the door.” The bereaved Mrs. Sumitra Singh added that she looked through a window to see her daughter standing.

But a while later when Mallika's mom knocked on the door there was no response. On finally entering the room, her worst fear was confirmed. The investigating police from the Kotwali locality went on record to say that the death looked like a suicide. But they added that it is only a prima facie observation. The law-enforcers have not ruled out foul play at the hands of a possible murderer or an abetment to suicide scenario.

If Mallika Rajput did indeed take her life, there needs to be a thorough investigation about the reason behind it. Others whose fate met a similar end include Sushant Singh Rajput and Jiah Khan from the Nishabd fame. As per statistics, the motive behind suicide usually has to do with matters of the heart. No, not from cardiovascular disease, but from Love. This fatal reason could be either anguish in love or unrequited love.

Mallika had proved to be quite a maverick in her short life. Apart from working in movies and alongside singers like Shaan and Javed Ali, she also embarked on a brief political career with the Bharatiya Janata Party between 2016 and 2018. What’s more, she proved to be a capable kathak dancer and song-writer of gazals. Mallika may sing no more, but her many recordings will live on in the ears and hearts of her fans – however small a consolation that might be.
