Indian Lady Soldier To Get Top UN Award
Major Radhika Sen to be honoured by the top global organisation.
How’s this for woman power? An Indian lady soldier – Major Radhika Sen – will have her name emblazoned on a top United Nations award. Indeed, the intrepid and compassionate 31-year-old will receive the coveted Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. This comes in recognition of the uniformed woman’s dogged work at promoting stability in the turbulent Democratic Republic of Congo. It was in this location that she helped organise community welfare centres while fighting for the rights of oppressed women and girls.
The honouring ceremony is all to take place on May 29th – the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. Believe it or not, the extraordinary Miss Sen who was born and raised in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh, was actually pursuing a career in Biotechnology. However, it looks like selfless patriotism supplanted personal goals. Indeed, the young lady quit her Master’s course in the scientific field to join the Indian Army. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay’s loss turned out to be the armed forces’ gain. And soon , Radhika’s efforts moved across borders and continents.
Indeed, in 2023, this daring young soldier was assigned to the UN mission in DRC. A short while later, she became part of the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion. A feminist to the core, Sen used her presence in the African country to provide safe spaces for local women to meet and discuss their problems. Among her other accomplishments, Radhika set up centres for vocational training and health and put a community alert network in place. Boy, we could surely use Major Radhika’s visionary initiative and leadership back home.
