UAE to Reward Rash Drivers for Steering Clear of Trouble
Here’s a way to get into the good books of the traffic police.
We all are aware of the fines one attracts for disregarding traffic rules in the UAE. There are even Black Point penalties that the errant driver can stack up from repeated offences, putting his or her licence in jeopardy. Some may even be on the brink of dooming their future on the road altogether. But now, the UAE’s Ministry of Interior has come up with a novel initiative to help these endangered drivers reverse their dubious record behind the wheel.
Yes, the once erring motorist has a chance to wipe the slate clean. Well, at least to some extent. Yes, for a fortnight beginning August 26, 2024, the MOI is launching an ‘Accident Free Day’ campaign - for signatories of a traffic pledge on its website. Then, the authorities will take note of previously reprimanded drivers who are making a concerted effort to navigate city streets with their conscience (and compass) intact.
The Ministry will reduce Black Points if it notices the concerned driver is:
1) Sticking to traffic lanes or transitioning slowly by signalling/indicating first.
2) Keeping a safe distance from vehicles in front or on either side.
3) Giving way to pedestrians, especially at zebra-crossings or streets outside schools.
4) Providing space for emergency vehicles to pass.
5) Keeping to speed limits.
6) Not getting distracted while driving by cell phones and other appliances.
Interestingly, this unique move is to coincide with the reopening of local schools after the summer holidays. This will not only ensure the protection of school children, but also raise awareness about road safety… while serving as an example to minors. After all, the classroom bench-sitter of today will be in the driver’s seat tomorrow. And such a gesture of goodwill by UAE officials is almost certain to set wayward drivers on the right path.
